Significance of Fish during Lunar New Year
Most Chinese people have heard of the idiom 年年有余 (níanníanyoǔyú), which translates to yearly surplus (of wealth). And it just so happens that the word for fish (鱼, yú) in chinese is a homophone for the word surplus (余, yú), hence the homophonic pun of 年年有鱼 - which means to "eat fish every year".
And that is why fish is such a popular dish during Lunar New Year.
The Ang Ko Li (Red Snapper) fish would be especially in demand during Lunar New Year as the colour Red is an auspicious colour in Chinese traditions.
